Because it's a big subject and so varied I have kept tips for saving money into easy to achieve segments, as when you start to save money you will want to do more. Grocery shopping is such a big part of the weekly budget that I have devoted a whole article to it in Save on Groceries. I’m not going to get into financial planning within these tips for saving money, but I do suggest that you look at your banking and credit card systems to make sure you are getting the best deal. Stay on top of things and make sure your money is working for you.
Household Expenditure. When it comes to tips for saving money on buying cleaning products and personal care items, such as toilet rolls, or toothpaste etc. Make sure you stock up when they are on special. Some things will save a few cents but expensive items like laundry detergent can save you dollars. If you don’t want to buy the cheapest products such as generic brands, look at the middle range rather than the top end. Make it a point to check the price per gram; it will give you a good idea of value for money. Take a good look at what you use. Do you really need a thousand cleaning products to do each job, when one will do them all. Marketing is about making you buy more products; don’t get caught up in the hype and try to avoid buying convenience products which will cost you more.
Cosmetics and personal care. Beauty is a very expensive and competitive business and doesn’t come cheap. Here there are several tips for saving money. Like all products there is a good middle range, so shop around, ask yourself are you just paying for fancy packaging? When it comes to make-up its all about application, the best make-up in the world won’t look good if it’s badly applied. To get the best out of your cosmetics get some expert advice so that you can ‘get the look’ without paying a fortune. Buying your hair care products at your hairdressers will cost you more, look for outlets where you can buy them cheaper. Do it yourself hair colour has never been easier, products are simple to use and cost a fraction of the price of salons. Because of advertising costs the price of cosmetic creams and lotions are hugely inflated and they don’t always perform to expectations. If you don’t want to compromise make sure you always buy your favorite brand when it’s on special, and take advantage of giveaways. Always use up one product before starting another. Products for men such as deodorant and shaving cream come on special regularly, if possible buy 2 or 3 to keep on hand.
The working week. If you use public transport make sure you are getting the best deal and pay attention to the zoning structure, it may be possible for you to walk one stop and remain in the cheaper zone. Take note of how much you spend on takeaway coffee, bottled water, and lunches. Consider these strategies.
______________ Family life. Families are expensive so any tips on saving money here will rep dividends. Games, toys, and books, for children or adults, can all be purchased cheaply at charity stores. The well known stores are very particular about safety and hygiene; it’s the ideal place to buy children and baby clothes. Some stores offer new clothing and home wares donated by large companies.
Tips for saving money on holidays. Choose inexpensive outings such as:
City kids enjoy a drive in the country to see birds and animals and children from the country find a day in the big smoke a treat.
General Expenses. Some utility companies offer discount if you pay by a certain date, try to take advantage of these types of offers. Annual expenses such as vehicle registration or insurance are cheaper if you are able to pay in advance, this isn’t always easy since you are dealing with large sums of money. If you are retirement age there are lots of savings to be made, be aware of your entitlements. If you pay club fees make sure you are getting value for money, if you don’t use the facilities on a regular basis it may be cheaper to pay casual fees. For many small business’s and contractors cash is still king and often they are happy to offer discount for cash payment. Take advantage of hire purchase when they are offering interest free periods, just make sure you pay off your purchase in the in the given period. ______________ Bartering. If you have a large group of friends consider the barter system. I knew a man who did the plumbing for his neighbor's new extension in return for having his house painted. As finances get tight people will be looking for more tips for saving money. Bartering can work well just make sure both parties know what they have agreed to. A tip for saving money, especially if you are moving house or relocating. Empty all your cupboards and drawers and collect together all the products you can find including drugs or pharmaceuticals. Throw out anything that is past its use by date, make sure you dispose of drugs or medicine safely. Now make a pact not to buy anything new before you have used up the old ones. I didn’t buy shampoo or hand cream for months, and don’t get me started on cleaning supplies! ______________ There are many more tips to save money which are too numerous to mention here but I hope this will serve to get you started on ways to make your money go further.
