Permanent Hair RemovalBefore we go any further we must clarify the meaning of the term Permanent Hair Removal. For the hair industry in general and the hair removal industry in particular Permanent does not mean forever, though this is improving with better equipment and research into drugs. Most procedures will last for a year or more before the hair grows back and treatment has to be repeated.
The re-growth of hair is usually finer and lighter, and subsequent treatments will
see permanent hair removal. The time between treatments can be extended with
the use of inhibitors. Other terms now used are Semi permanent hair removal and Long term hair removal, these depending on the results achievable but probably in the range of 6-9 months.
The aim of permanent removal is to destroy or remove the root of the hair that lies beneath the skin. To do this either energy, as in electrolysis and laser treatment or chemicals in drugs and creams are used, or a combination of the two.
Permanent removal will mostly require two or more treatments, as no matter what method is chosen, the task of killing off the hair root without damaging the surrounding skin is a delicate one. Skin colour and tanning also have an effect on laser treatment. Electrolysis is the most permanent system, but because of it’s cost it is usually confined to small areas such as eyebrows and upper lip.
Laser on the other hand is the most popular of the permanent removal systems, though it will take several treatments to make the method permanent. It is suitable for all areas except those close to the eyes.
Photoepilation or IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) This is often associated with Laser hair removal and has most of the same properties, so we have included this term under Laser hair removal.
Prescription drugs such as “Vaniqa” are permanent systems, but we consider them outside the parameters of this site, as they are for the treatment of a medical condition, and will not be prescribed for grooming purposes.
Hair Inhibitors. These are creams where the active ingredient attacks the keratin and dissolves the hair. Most of these preparations only effect the hair above the skin so we have included them under Temporary rather than permanent, although a lot claim permanency.
We are treating Waxing as a permanent hair removal system, because although it may only last one or two months, it’s true aim is to pull out the whole of the hair including the root, thereby making it permanent! ______________ If the cost of some, and the pain of others can be born, permanent is a far better option than that of the temporary variety. The greater time between treatments, the sparse and softer re-growth of hair, and it is often argued the cost over the same period of time, make permanent hair removal the choice.
