Menopause Women of today are lucky because menopause is a subject that can be discussed openly, there is plenty of information available and no woman should feel she must suffer alone. Not so many years ago menopause could only be discussed in closed circles; very little was known about it and it wasn’t even recognized as a medical condition. The female reproduction system is intricate, we speak glibly about the miracle of birth but it truly is an amazing feat to produce a child. When the female body starts to menstruate the womb goes into production mode, it will continue to do this for the next 40 or so years. Little wonder then that when the body has to shut down the reproduction system, it isn’t going to happen over night. During this change of life cycle, as the body works to recalibrate itself, the hormones are all over the place, everything is affected, the physical and emotional self. Much can be done to ease the discomfort during signs of menopause, an understanding doctor or physician can also be very helpful at this time. A very common symptom during at this time is depression, it’s not always severe and quite often manifests as something that can only be described as ‘sadness. Some women suffer an overwhelming need to cry for no reason; this isn’t always easy for others to understand. For many women their ability to bear children is tied psychologically with self image, the loss of fertility through menopause can be a blow to their self esteem. Such women often feel old and useless, they feel they are no longer esteemed or needed. This in turn adds to a general feeling of sadness and loss, for some women the transition can be a difficult time. Obviously during this time, life has to go on as normal, many women between the age of 45 and 55 are holding down a full time job, looking after family and quite often caring for elderly parents and grand children!! Coping with your change of life, along with all the other stuff going on can be challenging, if you are in this position try putting some new strategies in place before you get snowed under. To do this you will literally need to take time out so that you can take a good look at your situation. Quite often it will be a couple of simple changes that will make a difference. If you are lucky enough to have family or other support, discuss this with them. You are looking for anything that is going to help to take the pressure off; this might be a good time to delegate. It’s very important that you don’t neglect yourself during this time, a good diet and plenty of rest are essential during signs of menopause. If you allow yourself to get tired or stressed symptoms are likely to be more pronounced. There are several natural remedies which are available over the counter. Often it’s a case of trial and error to find what suits you best; sometimes simple remedies such as herbal teas can be very effective. Hormone replacement therapy is an option for some women but you will need to discuss it with your doctor or physician. Menopause can last for several years but with an action plan you can keep the discomfort and inconvenience down to a minimum. Menopause is just the end of a cycle, not the end of your life. Make sure you remain fit and healthy to enjoy the next stage. Written by Trish Powell
