Liver Spots on Hands

The appearance of liver spots on hands as we age are very common.

Liver spots, age spots and sun spots are very well known terms used to describe brown marks that can appear on the backs of hands, face or other exposed parts of the skin from about the age of 40 onwards.

More correctly known as Solar Lentigo, they often they appear as a dark brown mark resembling a freckle, they can vary a lot in size and colour but are generally harmless.

Liver spots have nothing to do with the health of the liver; it’s assumed they were dubbed liver spots because of the resemblance in colour. People with fair skin and those who have been exposed to the sun are more likely to have age spots. Common areas for age spots are:

  • Backs of hands

  • Face

  • Forearms

  • Forehead

  • Shoulders

Although liver spots are harmless, it’s wise to keep an eye on them and be aware of any changes that may occur. Nowadays we are very conscious of skin cancer and sun damage so doctors and physicians are always happy to check for anything out of the ordinary.

Many people are happy to accept liver spots on hands as part of the aging process and don’t worry about them. However liver spots on hands and face can be unsightly and some people find them down right distressing.

Getting rid of liver spots on hands isn’t easy but options are available. Topical treatment such as creams are available over the counter for liver spots on hands.

However stronger applications that contain bleaching agents or alpha-hydroxy need to prescribed by a physician. Such applications take a long time to work, maybe up to a year and success isn’t guaranteed.

Other methods available are freezing, sanding and laser treatment but these must be performed by a qualified dermatologist. You can also choose to have them removed by electro surgery or cryotherapy.

______________

If you decide on any of these methods here are a couple of tips.

  • Ask to see a license and certificate of qualification.

  •  Make sure they talk you through the procedure.

  • Ask if they have photos of previous work and testimonials.

  • Be aware that all procedures however small carry risk, liver spots may be ugly but a botched procedure could be worse.

Before creams and modern treatments came along women used a variety of natural methods to banish liver spots on hands. Applying lemon juice to liver spots was very common but results were minimal to say the least.

______________

Natural methods can be time consuming; going through rigmarole such as cutting up horseradish and soaking it in milk is okay if it works but very disheartening if it doesn’t.

The most important thing you can do for liver spots on hands and face is to wear sunscreen and a hat. If you opt for treatment such as laser freezing your dermatologist will advise you to wear sunscreen every day to ensure lasting results.

If you spend a lot of time in the sun, invest in garments such as "t" shirts and long sleeved shirts designed to reduce UVR exposure. If you have children or grandchildren, teach them sun sense so that later in life sun spots or liver spots on hands and face will be minimal or non existent.

______________

For myself I’ve found the best treatment is the use of collagen (though if your read our page on collagen you will find we use gelatin). I have a liver spot on the back of my hand; it was extremely dark in the centre, almost black, surrounded by a lighter brown area.

Since we started our collagen supplement a couple of years ago both my husband and myself have noticed an improvement in our skin. It’s less dry, more elastic and heals quickly.

Chris recently had skin cancers removed from his hands and face, the skin healed very quickly and there are no tell tale marks or scars.

A couple of months ago I decided to increase the amount of collagen we were taking, I started to use it in all our soups, sauces and porridge at breakfast time. I add about a teaspoon just before serving so that it dissolves properly.

One day recently I went to apply sunscreen to my hands and was amazed to find the liver spot almost gone.  It is still there but very faint so you actually have to look for it, as you can imagine I make sure that we both take our collagen supplement every day.

______________

Any treatment or method you decide to use to treat liver spots on hands and face needs to be backed up by a good diet and exercise regime.

If you incorporate a healthy diet with treatment for liver spots on hands and face you will maximize your chance of success. Remember to drink plenty of water; fresh fruit and vegetables also help your fluid intake because of their high water content.
