Laser Hair Removal

Over the last few years great advances have been made in the laser hair removal technique.  because of this, more and more people are choosing this permanent method of hair removal over the more traditional methods such as waxing and depilation.

Laser removal was trialed for about twenty years before being considered safe for public use.

Over time the technique has been improved and refined so that now consumers are happy with the procedure and for some, as little as three treatments can provide permanent hair removal.

______________

What is laser hair removal, and what makes it so appealing to people with body hair issues?  The technology of laser hair removal destroys the root of the hair follicles, so preventing the growth of new hair.  This is achieved by directing a concentrated, high energy laser light that passes through the skin onto the hair root.

Though the principal  of laser removal is the same, not all the lasers themselves work alike.  Depending on the type of skin and colour of the hair , different lasers may be employed.  The diode type laser is better used for darker skin while the Alexandrite has a longer pulse that is suited to deeper rooted hair.

______________

A laser that combines the two functions for both deep and surface rooted hair is the Switched Nd:YAG.  As it’s name implies it switches wave lengths of light  in rapid bursts to achieve this.

______________

Not strictly laser, but so similar we will include it here is Photoepilation.  This is permanent hair removal carried out using intense pulsed light (IPL)  The process destroys the hair follicle with a very powerful pulsating light that is absorbed by the hair.

This generates heat that then destroys the hair.  This method of laser hair removal has a wider band of light that is able to treat a greater range of hair and skin types.

Part of the attraction of laser removal is the fact that it is less painful than other methods and faster, ideal for removing large areas of hair from the back or legs. It is possible though to use laser hair removal on most parts of the body other than the area around the eyes.

The time taken for removal sessions obviously differs for the size of the area to be treated. A treatment for the upper lip for instance may only take a few minutes, where as a treatment for hair removal from the back of a male may take several hours.

______________

Laser hair removal can be expensive, so it is advisable to research the different treatment centers to become familiar with what they offer.  Discus your requirements with a qualified technician or dermatologist. Items that should be considered are; skin complexion, hair colour and texture, your state of health and any allergies or medication.

You should also be aware that you will need to avoid the sun both before and after hair removal treatments. Skin that has been exposed to a suntan sunburn or tanning lamps could cause discoloration of the skin lasting for several months.

______________

Adverse effects to laser treatments are rare, and although the procedure is virtually painless some patients experience a tingling sensation on certain parts of their body.  Be sure to discuss these issues, including the use of topical anesthesia for the more sensitive areas, during the consultation.

Your hair removal technician will give you post treatment instructions, these may typically include using little or no make up, regular moisturizing and the use of a good sun-block probably SPF30+. Some people experience a little redness or swelling after treatment, but this will disappear after a short time.  You may also experience some shedding for a few weeks, gentle loafer or washcloth action will help to remove the hairs.

______________

For long term hair removal the laser system is the most cost effective.  The results can vary from person to person but on the whole the laser hair removal method has proved to be very successful.  Laser hair removal could be the answer to your unwanted hair problem once and for all.
